I see that the P-8 ,at least the RAAF version, does not feature a MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) Boom.
Is such technology outmoded now ?

Supposedly, the MAD was felt redundant as the type is intended for high-altitude operations (see the HAAWC kit for the Mk 46s). BAE won a contract a few years ago for a UAS with MAD as some form of wingman, though I expect budget and sheer common-sense killed that one.

The JMSDF's P-1 has a MAD, but that is intended to operate more at lower altitudes where the system supposedly gives better results (I have limited ASW expertise, so someone better informed may reject this).

I also do not have much expertise in ASW but it is interesting to note that the Indian P-8I aircraft are equipped with at least two systems not on the P-8A; the CAE AN/ASQ-508A magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) system and the APS-143C(V)3 multimode radar.

MAD really is redundant. It was originally, when first invented, hoped to be a way to find a submerged sub easily and quickly. The US for a bit thought it would replace sonar as the primary means to do so. This was soon proven wrong as you get lots of false positives on stuff other than submarines. You also have to be really close to the target for it to work reasonably well.

Sonar and other sensors have advanced to a point where you really don't need MAD any more to do the job.

Interestingly though, I see that the Saab Swordfish retains it. Another option, perhaps.

It sounds like MAD is useful in certain areas. In the Baltics the water is shallow. Maybe it does not work so well in the Mid Atlantic or Pacific? I think they should be trying to cover the Continental shelves as well as the deep water. I can see going up in altitude to get to a search area, but I would not stay there. Besides, doesn't the Navy still have SOSSUS listening posts in the seabed? The best way to find and track a sub is to use several ways to confirm it is down there. An aircraft would still drop buoys to confirm a "bogey".

It is another option. It can also be used to better confirm that the target is a sub, or at least something man made which would help in situations where you aren't shooting first then figuring out what it was later.

The P8's are used at much higher altitude since it greatly increases their endurance.
