They're mighty pleased about the progress of the LHD's, but for about the last six or so copies they have been hammering non stop on getting some F-35B's on board.
Different authors from Brit ex carrier pilot & now regular writer for the magazine David Hobbs, Norman Friedman US writer on anything Navy, etc., are all putting in their opinions, some saying that without the F-35's for air cover in Amphib operations, the LHD's might as well stay at home.

They always mention that for one reason or another we may have to go it alone & invade some unnamed country without U.S. support.
Just wondering what country[s] they might have in mind?
Honestly, I can't see any plans for F-35Bs on either of them, but even a third dedicated aircraft carrying LHD would only have a small contingent of F-35Bs. I have never found solid evidence as to how many planes could be aboard, some suggest eight, while more could be carried elsewhere inside. Can anyone help me out on that point?
We really need the rest of the RAN to be ready on short notice before sending out a LHD, still waiting for the new AWDs and work out what to do with our subs.

The Navy League suggest about six for each LHD, although that would mean less of eveything else, including heavy lift choppers etc.

And on the subs, thats the other major debate by the Navy League is the question of Australias next submarine.
Commentators like recently retired Chief's of Navy & others, say that the Americans have the price of nuclear attack subs down to 'only' U.S.$1.4 billion [Aus$1.33b]

And as the quoted rough price for 12 locally built subs is around 30 billion, it seems like off the shelf from the U.S. is the way to go.

BUT would the U.S. [or Britain or France for that matter] sell nuclear subs?

The two main stumbling blocks then is building a whole support system to service them or send them to the states to have it done, plus the labour party wouldn't touch nukes with a barge pole, & they've cut spending to the lowest it's been since WW2. But seeing that they almost certainly wont be in office after the next election, the libs might be more accommodating, although I haven't got clue what the libs stance is on defence or anything else for that mater.

Doubtfull if a dozen subs could be manned seeing the troubles they've had retaining crew for the Collins, although a hefty $60,000 bonus for another tour seems to be working.

Perhaps a mixture of each.

I think the Aussies might be better off buying German diesel type submarines. You can avoid the political hissy fits. You might also look into a couple of Amphibious Warships that can carry helicopters, troops and maybe transport vertical take off aircraft (harriers would do).

We have two amphibious ships under construction, but no fixed wing aircraft is planned to operate from them.

The good thing is they will be multi-fuctional vessels. With the long coastline and poor interior transportation system they could prove very valuable.

They will be a huge asset, but IMO the biggest thing Australia needs is a submarine program that should double the current assets we currently have with the Collins class subs... although, any Collins class sub that is currently fully operational and deployable is 50/50 at best.

Poor interior transportation... which country are you referring to?

Garry,

I live where there is an excellent interstate highway system and lots of railroad lines. If you want to send military units by ground, you can do this in the continental US.

The Great Australian Desert makes getting from the South and Southeast Australia a bit difficult. There are not a great number of rail lines or many good roads. Remember World War II and Darwin?

Quietly- without too much fanfare- a rail link directly through the center of Australia,to Darwin, was completed comparatively recently.

That will certainly help the strategic situation. I would imagine the roads in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland are extensive. It is getting to the Northern Territories and West Australia that seems rough.

On US bases, Friedman says why the Aussie Government in turning down the USN's request to base Carriers in WA, is probably because they don't want to upset China, or fear of making Perth a possable future target.

He goes on to say that it's the wrong call, & that more US assets will be a greater deterrent.

The Aussie Government is becoming stuck between a rock & a hard place, on one hand wanting to further cement the already strong ties with the US, & on the other hand not getting up the nose of a trading partner thats making Aus filthy rich.

It's a hard call, but I wouldn't be surprised that after the next election the Libs will give it the green light, for better or worse.

So, should we, or shouldn't we?

I have to ask, why the idea of basing US carriers in WA, what's wrong with any of the ports along the eastern states?

What hope have the other states got.

As of last month, the Hume Highway between the Victorian border and Holbrook NSW is stillllllllllllll single lane each way

4 years ago, I drove Townsville/Sydney.......single lane each way for most of it.

5 years ago, I did Perth/Sydney........single lane each way.....(except sometimes entering/leaving major towns).

And, in the last 5 years, I have driven every major intercity road between Adelaide/Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane numerous times.

Their condition certainly does not reflect the amount of money raised via petrol taxes/excise.

And the safety authorities have the hide to blame the road toll largely on "speeding".

Those who set road funding allocations are, individually, the biggest killers of all.

It's a bit "chokka" for Eastern states ports/infrastructure.

WA basing is also closer to the potential "action".

As much as I would like to see some major US hardware based in near-to- me Jervis Bay(former RAN fleet anchorage - when we still had a fleet), it's more useful at HMAS Stirling.
