29th Sept 1942
The 24th Panzer now forms a thin defensive line with KG Edelsheim forward and KG Winterfeld behind them. Stukas are bombing the sides of the Volga.
The Soviet 193rd Rifle division has now moved into position directly across from them.
At 0430 hours, the Soviets attack KG Edelsheim with strong artillery support and tanks (including T-34s). Their point of main effort is one of the depleted battalions (Major von Heyden's second battalion PzG regiment 26) holding the line which is positioned in poor defensive ground. These men lack clear fields of fire.
The Soviet tanks open up and concentrate their fire on them while Soviet troops infiltrate and inflict losses, killing men in their foxholes. The battalion is pushed back into a series of resistance nests. They radio to KG Winterfeld to dispatch some panzers.
The panzers arrive. Officers of the besieged battalion quickly organize a counterattack with the panzers. The counterattack succeeds as they push into the surprised soviets and restore the area. 8 men are MIA.
Strategy discussion: The further advance of the 24th Panzer to the north east is deemed not possible unless 100 Jager division moves up with them. 24th Panzer is now 'small forces'. 100 Jager moves up some but gets blocked. But this relieves soviet pressure from the 24th Panzer.
KG Winterfeld uses this lull to launch a raid and take more of the Barrikady housing estate.
Paulus returns to division CP with the Commander of Army Group B, Generaloberst von Weichs. They discuss status with Generalmajor von Lenski and leave.
140 men are killed and wounded, including 39 killed and 8 MIA
30th Sept 1942
Korps order:" Hold and improve attained positions".
Current situation: KG Edelshim's position and flanks are improved by Infantry regiment 276 (160 men left, wow pretty small....) and elements of 100 Jager division. Across from them are the Barridkady Gun Factory and the Red October Steel Factory. Behind these two factories is the Volga.
The introduction of these two divisions free up some of 24th Panzer's forces for a further attack in the NE direction.
von Edelsheim pulls Panzergrenadier regiment 21 off the line and combines this with Motorcycle battalion 4.
The losses since June 28th have been great. One panzerpioneer company has only 15 men left.
Division calls for a next day attack to gain the hills on the NE edge of Barrikady. KG Edelsheim and KG Winterfeld are to form one pincer, and XIV Panzerkorps are to form the other.
Personal account: The physical health of the men have declined due to the constant battle. Jaundice, stress, bad state of health among some. The loss of so many experienced officers is a concern.
75 men killed and wounded today.

1st October 1942:
The Soviets attack the defensive line on a broad front with strong forces and thrown back. 24th panzer digs in more and improves their defenses.
389 infantry division is expected to arrive, and the attack is delayed.
115 men killed and wounded today

Soviet recon probes repelled.
General von Richthofen, commander of Luftflotte IV (most of the Luftwaffe's air force on the eastern front) arrives at hill 107.5 that was won by 24th panzer.
LW bombs targets along the Volga and almost kill the leader of 62nd Army, General Chikov. (oil tanks incident)
Division orders: A limited assault on 3rd October, covered by the 389 Infantry division and IR 276 on the flanks. The aim is to produce a large bulge into the enemy defenses by taking buildings (KG Edelsheim) and open areas (KG Winterfeld).
165 men killed and wounded

3rd Oct. 1942
Enemy recon probes repulsed and strong air attacks made against the division. Neither hindered the regrouping and preparations for the next assault.
PzG regiment 21
PzG regiment 26 (no SPW of I. battalion)
Motorcycle regiment 4 (without I and 2 company)
1st and 2nd company Panzerpioneer

2nd battalion Heavy rocket regiment 2
Panzer battalion Winterfeld with panzerpioneer platoon, flak platoon, pioneer platoon. (SPW)
1st battalion SPW PzG regiment 26
2nd company Mortorcycle regiment 4
1st battalion panzerartillery regiment 89 (105mm)
More Artillery support assigned:
2 batteries of 105mm, 2 batteries of 21 cm mortars.
389 Infantry division, preceded by artillery, advance forward on the flank of KG Winterfeld. KG Edelsheim advances into the Schnelhefter block which closes the gap between them and the Barrikady Gun factory.
The 24th panzer's commanders are disappointed at 389's slow progress and consider calling off the attack. But the 389 breaks through by mid-day and this move is withdrawn.
Artillery liaison officers are supplied to the 2 KGs and ensure precision fires. The KGs move forward and establish defense lines.
Nightfall. Soviets are infiltrating everywhere in the darkness, and even the panzers are firing. A paranoid night, as troops fire at shadows. Tracers are flying everywhere.
Korps order: General von Seydlitz orders 389 ID and 24th panzer to continue attacking NE to gain a plateau on the Barrikady settlement. Positions are to be consolidated and defended.
75 men dead and wounded.
27 Aug 14, 01:33
Operational panzers during October-Nov.
This is what they started out with on June 28th, 1942:
4rd Oct. 1942
Some regroupings. Generalmajor von Lenski and Major von Menges move to the advanced CP to monitor the attack.
LW softens Soviet defense lines. Artillery preparation.
The Panzer situation: 9 Panzer III (short), 17 Panzer III (long), 5 Panzer IV (short), 5 Panzer IV (long), 2 command panzers.
At 0900 hours, Stukas stop bombing and the assault troops push forward, spearheaded by Winterfeld's 38 Panzers and KG Edelsheim.
After a few hundred meters, Soviets start firing AT guns, mortars, and machineguns. Artillery observers attached to spearheads call down heavy artillery on soviet positions.
With this distraction, the Panzers maneuver behind massive buildings (6 stories tall, streets and streets of them) and destroy seven T-34s and 2 others with their long barrel III and IVs at close range. Infantry advance with them.
The Soviets are thrown out of the area and the German bulge enlarges.
The command post of Major von Winterfeld is nicknamed "der Heldenkeller" (the cellar of Heroes). This building has panzers and SPWs parked around it.
Prisoners taken from 28th Sept to 4th Oct: 785
The operations for the past few days exceeded expectations; it was expected that 100 Jager would be able to help but the 24th had to go at it alone.
110 men killed and wounded today.
27 Aug 14, 01:44
Now, this is an important bit of information. The 24th Panzer had experienced constant attrition over the months. From reading these entries, one can get a sense that their combat power is steadily declining. Their support weapons are doing OK but they have shortages of infantry which effect their ability to consolidate and hold larger chunks of territory.
In short, they are stretched thin due to the lion's share of losses being inflicted on the panzergrenadiers and pioneers.
The current Trench strength (combat strength only, without drivers)
Panzergrenadier regiment 21: 265 men
Panzergrenadier regiment 26: 319 men
K4: 160 men
Panzer pioneer battalion: 94 men
In short, they have only 838 front line fighters left. Most of the division is now heavy support weapons and services.
They lost 550 fighters since Sept 27th
The division, now mostly heavy support weapons, must rely on external sources for infantry if they can.
Prisoners from 27th Sept to 4th Oct.: 1,305
Appendix information: 24th Panzer's vehicles:
June 28, 1942:
32 Panzer II, 112 Panzer III, 32 Panzer IV, 7 Command Panzers
36 Armored recon vehicles, 112 Armored personnel carriers
909 Passenger vehicles, 1852 Lorries, 29 Kom, 250 Towing Tractors

5th Oct 1942:
KG Winterfeld, KG Edelsheim are close to the Barrikady Gun Factory now. Infantry Regiment 276 and First battalion Jager Regiment 54 are holding the line to the south. There are still many civilians in the surrounding battle area. They huddled in cellars, ravines, and gullies.
(On the 5th and 6th of Oct. women and children of the city were evacuated by the Feldgendarmerie. The abled bodied men were seized and brought to a prisoner collection point. It is also known, that the refugees were being plundered by many german troops.)
The popular commander of 2nd battalion, PzG Regiment 21 is killed while on a recon mission in a motorcycle-sidecar.
Division orders: Hold the line, consolidate defenses. Korps: Continuation of attack does not seem possible.
Heavy rocket launchers of Morser battalion 616 are brought in as support. Artillery is positioned for defense and any officer, platoon commander or above, can authorize blocking fire by firing a red flare.
Artillery studied the area, and allocated potential targets. (Gun factory, enemy artillery on the east bank, ferries, and bridging sites). Troops fortify the area and make preparations for the defense.
Pioneer battalion 635 reinforces the division with its 95 combat troops. It is allocated as reserve.
120 men dead and wounded today.
6th Oct. 1942
Enemy night time air attacks, especially targeting the artillery positions. Enemy recon probes repulsed.
From sun up, Soviet artillery and rockets hit the front line, inflicting losses.
The troops are stressed, worn out and jaundice and dysentery are the major illnesses.
Colonel von Edelsheim argues with von Lenski about the 'barely reasonable operational orders'. Basically, he believes that they are given missions beyond their current combat condition.
60 men dead and wounded today.
7th Oct 1942:
More Nighttime air attacks and enemy recon probes. Petrol shortages, and artillery ammunition is being accumulated & rationed for a future assault.
35 men dead and wounded today
8th Oct. 1942:
Commanders conference. Soviet artillery fire all day. Panzer 361 gets a direct hit and all crew members are killed.
33 men dead and wounded today
9th Oct. 1942:
Coordination measures between division and LW improves with the addition of artillery observer (heavy artillery) and ground observer (LW) from Fliegerkorps 8.
Soviets attack the entire front and are thrown back everywhere.
43 men dead and wounded today

October 10, 11, 12, 13, 1942:
The usual strong artillery fire falling on the division's sector, and division's artillery responded with counterbattery fire. Stukas also attack all day. The shortages of petrol have made the supply of ammunition more difficult.
The panzers have been supporting the defense of Infantry division 389 these past days.
Leutant Kohler (German soldier who grew up in Siberia) wins the Knight's Cross for infiltrating behind soviet lines with a captured Soviet lorry (stacked with 250 soviet mines). He and his disguised men use their weapons or talking to get past Soviet troops and plant the mines in 'the massive building located behind the Barrikady Gun factory that was reputed to be the HQ of a senior Soviet General'.
The building was detonated and collapsed. The Lorry returned to German lines with wounded commandos.
Major commander changes:
Oberstleutant von Hellermann (receives a job transfer) hands over command of the panzergrenadier regiment to Oberst von Below. He is awarded the Knight's Cross for his performance in Stalingrad.
Oberst von Edelsheim also receives a transfer and leaves Stalingrad. Oberst von Scheele takes command of the KG.
The men have not eaten potatoes, vegetables, or fruit in many weeks.
New divisions have been brought over to Northern Stalingrad. This includes the 14th Panzer division. They will take part in the next day's offensive.
A new attack is planned on Oct. 14th spearheaded by KG Jaenecke. KG Edelsheim (which has not been renamed to KG Scheele) will push forward and get even closer to the Barrikady Gun factory.
Pzg R 26, K4, Panzer battalion Winterfeld w/ Pioneer and Flak platoon
1st company PzJager, I/III battalion Panzerartillery.
The panzers and the armored cars of first company K4 will support the attacks of all the divisions in the sector. They were ordered not to be used as assault guns and not be "wasted in house to house fighting".
Artillery situation: 7 x artillery guns and 13 x 20mm guns have been rendered non-operational by barrel bursts caused by defective ammunition.
There are shortages of flares and signal ammo, which may cause problems coordinating with the Luftwaffe.
127 prisoners taken Oct 5 to Oct 11
120 men killed and wounded in these days.
I looked ahead of the book. Their battle will continue but casualties drop after the attack on October 14th and 15th. Why? I believe that this is the last major attack of the 24th Panzer as the assault spearhead.
All of the division's front line fighters combined are reduced to the size of an understrength battalion. Afterwards, its role is mainly to support other units with its heavy weapons and its small remaining front line strength.

14th October 1942
Attack on the Brickworks and the southern part of the Tractor factory.
Fliegerkorps 8 and artillery make a heavy preparatory bombardment on the Tractor Factory & the bridgehead there. Medium bombers and stukas fly overhead and bomb their targets.
The VVS also appears, with Soviet fighters and 'Iron Gustavs' dropping bombs on Gumrak railway station. The VVS launches its raid, and disappears before the LW fighters could give them a chase.
Soviet AA opens up and brackets the area with flak but they don't make much of an impact as the stukas make low level flights to avoid this by 'rushing past over our heads'.
The firepower dropped is of such volume that the pillars of smoke merged together over the city to form one massive cloud.
24th Panzer's mission is to support KG Jaenecke (389th Infantry division). Panzers are to support Infantry regiment 566. KG Edelsheim is to give KG Jaenecke flank protection and advance with them.
The firestorm stops. The Infantry advance with panzers trailing closely behind. The advance is brisk with soviet resistance finished by mortars, hand grenades, and small arms fire. After a few hours and with low casualties, KG Edelsheim wins ground and repulses two soviet counterattacks.
Their objective is reached. Stukas reappear and continue bombing. 25 VVS bombers also attack with strong fighter protection.
One company of Panzers help IR 577 by destroying an AA battery and several tanks. They lose one out of 10 panzers to shellfire.
Soviet troops take heavy losses from rockets. Noticeably, soviets are killed by shockwave which ruptures their lungs.
This offensive was the first time in the history of the 24th Panzer division where the bulk of the division had not participated in the attack of the Korps. The heavy losses from the past six weeks from attacking almost daily was the reason.
85 men killed and wounded.
15th Oct 1942:
24th Panzer supports KG Jaenecke (389th Infantry division) with their artillery and panzers. KG Jaenecke reaches the shore of the Volga.
The Soviets are identified as 193rd, 308th Rifle division and 37th Guards Rifle division. Intelligence officer Rittmeiester Graf vom Hagen believes that most of the soviets are rear echelon without sufficient training.
Next day mission: 14th Panzer and 305th Infantry division are to attack with 24th Panzer in support with its firepower and panzers.
50 men killed and wounded.

16th October 1942:
305th Infantry division and 14th Panzer division supported by 24th Panzer ( KG Edelsheim)
305th Infantry: IR 576, IR577, IR 578
14th Panzer: K64, Panzer regiment 36, PzG R 103
Several divisions' worth artillery strike Soviet positions. Stukas and fighter bombers clear a path and target front line positions.
14th Panzer and 305th Infantry advance while KG Edelsheim moves to provide overwatch.
The Soviets have 84th Tank Brigade dug in and in defense. The soviets also have dug in AT guns. KG Jaenecke runs into very tough resistance. Several panzers burst into flames and Stalin organs hit the forward assault elements. Artillery also comes on them.
A tank battle ensues between 14th panzer and the brigade. 17 panzers are knocked out along with 16 soviet tanks (1 KV-1, 7 T-34s, 8 T-60s).
The Germans regroup, and attack again..this time taking half of the Gun Factory by nightfall.
24th Panzer removes a lot of mines in their sector.
24th Panzer is ordered to attack the Bread factory. Pzg Regiment 108 of 14th Panzer is given to 24th Panzer. They are to form one pincer, while the other elements of 14th Panzer and 305th Infantry are to form the other.
The Soviets in Skulpturny park are to be encircled.
30 men killed and wounded.
27 Aug 14, 22:56
17th October 1942
German harrassment fires on the soviets. Under the cover of the artillery umbrella, the german units reposition.
Most of 24th Panzer's panzers were sitting in workshops, waiting for spare parts to arrive.
note: (a Panzer IV 'schwadron' (company, but they use the Calvary term) originally had 10 Panzer IV and 5 Panzer II)).
After good support of the panzers and artillery, the two pincers met and cleared away the soviet troops in their path. Artillery and stuka bombs struck the soviets inside of the park. The German forces then methodically clear part of the park of nests of resistance and take prisoners.
The next day's plan is clear the pocket of soviets and mop up areas won of any remnants.
31 men dead and wounded.
18th October 1942:
14th Panzer and 24th Panzer push towards the Barrikady Gun factory with infantry, panzers, infantry guns, and heavy mortars.
This developed into extremely bitter house to house fighting against the Soviets who fought to the death. There are also enemy trench systems that need to be cleared. Soviets defend with heavy artillery, small arms, and mortars.
The Brickworks factory is secured and the troops of 24th panzer reach the Volga. They assume defensive positions along it.
The Germans continue compressing the Soviets, and the Soviets call artillery and stalin organ rockets onto themselves and the Germans. (Danger close!)
The removal of the soviet pocket was a 'stunning blow' but Infantry Regiment 276 suffers great losses and is now a nearly combat ineffective empty husk.
Account: Soviets are constantly bring forward AA batteries even though many are neutralized. The AA fire is now 'hellish' for the Stukas every morning and the Germans have to expend efforts to knock out the enemy guns.
Another giant black smoke cloud rose over the air of the battle zone.
Prisoners: 12th Oct to 18th Oct:
326 (including 94 deserters)
15 men dead and wounded today.
27 Aug 14, 23:25
19th Oct 1942:
305th Infantry division proposed to take the northern half of the Gun Factory and then thrust through the Volga with 24th Panzer. A regrouping and a re-naming.
KG Below, under the new commander, Colonel von Below.
PzG R 21
PzG R 26
a battalion of IR 576
5th company K4
Panzer battalion Winterfeld
2 squads of pioneers
29 Panzers operational.
(Given the last status report, I believe that all this infantry combined is only equivalent to a medium sized or weak battalion)
Artillery fire of 2 divisions- 24th Panzer and 305th ID- launch a preparation, much of it falls on the Gun factory. Forward observers are headed with the spearheads and will strike the breakthrough positions.
The attacking infantry are now inside of the factory complexes with its drab, skeletal, and bombed out framework. The rainstorm is pouring and the ground gets very muddy and difficult.
The soldiers fire at Soviet muzzle flashes and storm the workhalls. They take losses to small arms and mortar fire.
Hall 4 and Hall 6 makes things difficult and it is clear to the troops that it is going to be a bloody and protracted affair. The complete capture of the Gun factory has not succeeded and the assault of 24th Panzer is now postponed. It continues to rain heavily.
The men of 24th Panzer are relieved, as they loath to take heavy losses today. An officer comments that 1st battalion of one of the panzergrenadier regiments only has 25 men left.
The 24th panzer holds the line. Their mortarmen eject a grouping of 250 soviet infantry from a gully. Then they start bombing the shore of the Volga with mortars and infantry guns, inflicting losses. This is successful but their ammunition becomes much depleted.
After the attack on the Gun factory is called off, the Soviets made a surprise attack and 'enemy stormtroops' recaptured the northern part of the Gun factory and broadened the bridgehead opposite 305th Infantry division.
Division orders: Defend the Bridgeworks with KG Below!
Artillery planning also occurs, and this deals with attacking Volga shipping and soviet movements. Infantry platoon leaders are authorized artillery support if green signal flares are fired.
19 men killed and wounded today
20th Oct 1942:
24th Panzerartillery destroys 4 soviet batteries and sinks a barge on the Volga. 305th Infantry continues to attack the Gun factory while 24th Panzer holds.
Infantry regiment 276 (heavily damaged, just small remnants) returns to parent division.
General von Lenski thanks IR 276 with a letter:
"Deeply affected, we today remember all the fallen comrades of your regiment that in the highest fulfillment of their duty have given up their lives for Fuhrer and Volk in the fighting around Stalingrad.
Their sacrifice obliges us to keep fighting until the final victory for our people. Heil our Fuhrer!"
21 men killed and wounded today

21st Oct 1942
Panzers and Artillery to support Jager Regiment 54 on their attack against the factory along with the LW.
The Jagers, however did not coordinate well with the panzers (I'm guessing due to lack of panzer-infantry training & experience) and the panzer company commander's panzer hits a mine and he dies. Several panzers also roll over the minefield and become disabled at the same time.
Soviet anti-tanks opened up......
The failure: The Jagers had a tendency to follow the panzers in the face of enemy fire rather than move forward and clear out soviets and mines (like the panzergrenadiers and panzerpioneers were trained to).
The momentum of the attack ebbed away. Assault groups paused and regrouped but there were only 2 panzers in support. They attacked differently and made most of their objective.
Jager Regiment 54 took 160 casualties and 35 prisoners.
7 out of 10 panzers employed in this operation were lost including the commander. The 7 panzers were however, recovered and towed away.
17 men killed and wounded today.
22nd October 1942:
Fighting continues in the gun factory.
Strategy day. Another attack planned with 24th Panzer supporting the 305th ID with its heavy weapons and panzers.
24th Panzer's commanders complain to Korps that their panzers were being frittered away in useless attacks with infantry units inexperienced in tank/infantry cooperation. Some lobbying goes on, and instructions.
15 men dead and wounded.

23rd October 1942
Soviet artillery pounds the German positions, both at the front and in the rear. Several soviet bombers carpet the area.
Full moon gives some more visibility during the night as does artillery flashes. Soviet stormgroups operated against German outposts and frontline positions but these were repulsed.
KG Below was spared most of this. (thanks to fact- IMO that they no longer hold much front line, and now rely mostly on other divisions for infantry and holding areas)
Panzer strength for operation:
13 mediums, 2 command panzers.
Several divisions (305 ID, 14th Panzer, 79 ID) , south of 24th panzer, attack and aim to secure the Steel, Bread, and Gun Factory and reach the Volga. 24th Panzer is to remain on standby and reinforce any good opportunity. Support will all weapons. 24th Panzer forward observers with 305th ID.
Stukas and artillery preparation starts. Panzers support 305th ID and destroy strongpoints. 24th Panzerartillery also retards the soviets by attacking their assembly areas and mortar positions.
Heavy cover of low-lying clouds form over the city at 1030 hours, canceling all Luftwaffe operations. The Soviets immediately capitalize on this opportunity and launch a strong counterattack at the Gun factory and took Hall 4 from the 305th ID. 24th Panzer moved in to cover 305th ID.
The clouds clear up and Stukas come down and attack Hall 4. 305th ID and 24th Panzer artillery also strike the same area.
7 men dead and wounded.
24th October 1942:
Lots of artillery activity and firing at various targets. 3 soviet batteries destroyed. Lots of LW and VVS activity. The assault of the three divisions is moving very slowly.
The Soviets are being bombarded but do not seem to be weakening.
Remember Oberst von Broich, the vacationing winner of the knight's cross and the original replacement leader of the division?
He is now commanding and training march battalions meant to reinforce 24th Panzer. The first march battalion arrives with 1,000 men. OKH promises that march battalion two will arrive on Nov. 15th.
Division staff hope to get 4 march battalions.
General von Lenski: The pzg regiments, due to snipers and stalin organ fire, have lost 10 men a day on average in Stalingrad.
The replacements are not 'full value' as they were soldiers from offices and rear services pulled out and given only brief combat training. Many of their old jobs have been replaced with Hiwis.
The 24th Panzer was meant to be pulled out of Stalingrad weeks ago and held in reserve but this proposal was not authorized because OKH had ordered Stalingrad to be taken more quickly with available forces.
von Lenski sees this as an error.
(The ramifications of this is obvious: Hitler gave his orders, and the OKH obeyed. Now when Uranus comes, 6th Army will not have this armored reserve.)
28 Aug 14, 01:58
25th, 26th, 27th October 1942:
VVS attacks observation posts with phosphorous bombs. VVS fighters strafe ground targets. LW and artillery activity. Barrikady Gun factory is taken by the Germans.
24th Panzer supports all attacks including a heavy counterbattery mission against 11 Soviet batteries.
The Volga is gained by these divisions on 27th Oct. 1942. VVS brought over 20-30 fighters but these are hit badly by LW fighters and flak.
Personal account: Their diet: eg. surviving on black bread, canned meat, and dried vegetables with barley. Jaundice, or infectious hepatitis is spreading among the German troops leading to further losses of personnel. Horrific dressing station situation, overcrowded with wounded and dying.
20 men dead and wounded.
28th Oct 1942:
VVS night attacks and soviet artillery attacks. Daytime VVS fighter attacks. LW dominates the air space.
Successful counterbattery missions- 9 batteries and 1 rocket launcher silenced.
Korps order: Withdrawal of 24th Panzer from front-line after Stalingrad is completely captured.
8 men dead and wounded.
29th October 1942
VVS and artillery attacks. LW activity.
6th Army orders: Widen your defensive sector and free the other divisions of their holdings so they have more forces to attack.
If infantry is inadequate take panzer crews without drivers.
24th Panzer division assembles "Alarmeinheit Panzer Regiment 24", which is 124 men . They are composed of mechanics, panzer crews without vehicles, clerks, and others.
Korps order: 24th Panzer is to relieve 79th ID which is now at the Red October Steel Factory. This is shocking news for officers at division headquarters. They had expected to be pulled out for a rest and not sent to another hot zone.
The feeling of the men is that the 24th Panzer has been misused in Stalingrad and made to decay in this type of combat.
Personal account: The sky is continuously blood red over Stalingrad.
8 men dead and wounded.
