That's possible (anything is possible) but the Saurer (Sd.Kfz.254) was built in very small numbers (140). They would be very rare by 1943.

If I had to guess, I would say that they were probably in either an Sd.Kfz.250 or Sd.Kfz.251, simply because they were the most common halftracks that could be equipped with radios and would generally be available to infantry units.

I'm reading 'Stalin's keys to Victory' (Dunn) and like Glantz he identifies the formations against Blau I-III July-August as being mostly those formed during the chaos of 1941.

These were a mixed bag and generally weaker in leadership, morale, unit cohesion, weapons, and training. Some units fought hard, while others disintegrated under enough pressure or fumbled in operations (like the tank corps (summer counterstrikes) and some infantry units.

The soviet formations moved into the Stalingrad sector in the fall/winter of 1942 were comparably better trained, and performed noticeably better. This trend can be sensed in 'Leaping horseman'.

I think what stands out with the soviet command and control system is its ruthless commitment of combat units in order to execute a strategy. The soviet forces fought inside Stalingrad were outclassed in terms of firepower and suffered from continuous & accurate aerial bombing on a daily basis by hundreds of bombers. It was not like they were spread out on the steppe; they were all concentrated there in predictable city areas. The bombing would only end in bad weather or nightfall.

November 30, 1941, before the final attacks on Tula city. R6 is 3rd Panzer, R35 is 4th Panzer, and R39 is 17th Panzer:

Quote:
In actual fact, the 2. Panzer-Armee had ceased to be an armor field army for some time. It had the following numbers of tanks operational on 30 November: Panzer-Regiment 6, twenty-eight; Panzer-Regiment 35, thirty-four; and Panzer-Regiment 39, ten.

During that time, the 3. Panzer-Division announced its achievements from 22 June to 22 November 1941: 52,289 prisoners taken; 485 tanks, 71 armored cars, 905 artillery pieces, 203 antiaircraft guns, 567 antitank guns, 366 mortars, 1,540 machine guns, 3,130 trucks, 100 staff cars, 19 motorcycles, and 157 tractors captured or destroyed; 89 destroyed, 119 shot-down, and 63 captured aircraft. The fighting forces were 1,300 kilometers from the western borders of Russia and had covered 4,500 kilometers. The ammunition columns had covered 17,000 kilometers; the fuel columns, 20,000.

After the final attacks, December 5th, 1941:

Quote:
That special ďdistinctionĒ for the division did not fill the officers and enlisted personnel with satisfaction. They knew that the formations only had about half the combat power they once did and that they could barely be considered an armored force any more. The organization, weaponry and equipment of the division is mirrored in these numbers:

SchŁtzen-Regiment 3, with six companies of sixty men each; three antitank guns; six SPWís
SchŁtzen-Regiment 394, with six companies of fifty men each; no antitank guns
Panzer-Regiment 6, with eighteen Panzer IIIís and four Panzer IVís
Artillerie-Regiment 75, with nineteen light field howitzers, two heavy field howitzers, and three 10-centimeter cannon
KradschŁtzen-Bataillon 3, with one motorized company and the remaining partially motorized companies
Panzerjšger-Abteilung 521, with eleven self-propelled guns
Panzerjšger-Abteilung 543, with two heavy and one light antitank gun
A few sentences that describes 1943-1945, a near endless crisis for the 3rd Panzer:

Reading List #1 Tactics. The other tactics book I want to read is the 'History of the 2nd Tank Army' but the book isn't out yet.

I have finished everything except GD III and the last part of 23rd.

These reading lists were designed by me, sourcing help from ACG as well,.. to be a logical progression and inclusive of the more substance laden books. As the reading list moves forward, it gets more and more top-down, abstract and theoretically complicated.

Reading List #2 Armored operations (tentative)

27. Korsun Pocket Zetterling
28. Red Storm over the Balkans
29. Decision in the Ukraine
30. Last Victory in Russia
31. Hellís Gate

Reading List #3 Operations (very long and Glantz dominated (pretty much most of what he has published), Stahel, etc. ) I have purchased lots of books..more than I have time for but there is a lot more that I haven't bought yet.

Wehrmacht prematurely declares victory at Stalingrad:

"As the Fuhrer said in an important speech: 30 million tons annual of shipping traffic has been cut off. No more ships on the Volga. And that's the most important thing!"

I've coming back to the Stalingrad Trilogy, and will finish it. I am up to the bolded and will do a few re-reads & topics.

The attack on Oct. 14, 15 towards the Tractor factory, Tractor village, and Spartanovka, (spearheaded by 305.ID and 14.Pz, both around half strength with a couple very weak formations like 24.Pz) with ~115 tanks maximum and supported by 1,250 aircraft of Luftflotte II was an interesting one.

538 german causalities were taken, but they inflicted around 10,000 losses on 62.A, leading to crisis to crisis. 62.A ferried 3,500 injured across the volga. The differential is most certainly the use of "rolling" tactical airpower, that released its payload on the forward edges of the advance, killing many defenders with bombs.

Of interest are the figures: The battle to clear the great bend of the Don had been more costly than the city fighting:

To Oct 18, 1942

losses:

6.AOK: since 21 August: 40,068
since 13 Sept: 13,343

Soviet POWs: since 21 August: 57,800
since 13 Sept: 17,900

But the very worst city fighting was yet to come.

IMO Soviets were holding by a shoestring.

Yep, Nov. in the Barrikady/Red October areas.

Joly's Stalingrad Axis puts German/Soviet casualties at roughly ~25,000/75,000 inside of the city. The bulk of losses were outside of the city during the same time period especially around the Stalingrad land bridge. It is interesting that the less well covered Kotluban offensives were much greater in casualties than the city fighting.

The half strength german infantry in beginning of Sept. compromised and lengthened the whole battle, making it the monster that it was.

-From 12-19 Oct, 6.AOK receives reinforcements with 8 new infantry and 2 new pioneer battalions. Of interest is that 24.Pz is rejuvenated to a degree and once again viable to take a major role in the offensive for the final pieces of Stalingrad- Red October/Barrikady. It is one of the four spearhead units, with the strongest being 14.Pz.

-The first four Kotluban offensives up to end of Oct 42' (generally involving 4 armies attacking 2 Korps supported by LF-II) were massive and although I don't have exact figures, were roughly 200,000+ casualties in total and involved around 600+ tanks.

The tiny bridgeheads at Red October/Barrikady Gun factory (1.5 square KM). 1 Pz, and 2 ID vs. 4 Rifle Divisions.

German pz. situation LI Korps: Oct. 26: only 37 tanks and AG.

6,000 German combat troops vs 3,000 Soviet combat troops

I am reading the last 100 pages of 'Armageddon'. Of interest is how Glantz repeatedly tears apart Chuikov's memoirs. Sometimes he uses it for insights, but more often he reveals inaccuracies in Chuikov's account.

In Endgame II, I see the author do the same thing to Raus' account of Op. Winter Storm.

----

The final act: 6.AOK receives 4 combat engineer battalions cannibalized from other divisions and 1 reserve (none full strength, all 500-300 men) as reinforcements to help take the last pieces of Stalingrad.

-----

For 10th Nov. 3,000 german infantry reinforced by 2,200 combat engineers stood to take the Barrikady Gun Factory. The Soviet defenders were less than half of this number.

-----

6.AOK's 12 x ID took 12,000 casualties in Oct. and were short 74,000 men by 1 Nov. These were primarily combat losses, mostly infantry and engineers. LI Korps (5 ID) took 9,500 of these losses.

By Nov 13, 62.A had only 8,000 men west of the volga.

The one about Moscow41 was good, good enough to see how much the german's failed to think in end october.
I guess that the story of the Wiking and others in the Terek will show how much it was futile to climb the hills...and be trapped in the woods or in the valleys. The same toward Tuapse-Sochum.
For some units (Degrelle for exemple) the Caucasus has been as much bloody and scary than Stalingrad for others.
