They are good guns if you're a collector and want a certain manufacturer or a piece of history but as shooters, they'll be pretty well crapped out.

You guys get to buy back the ones you used initially, then.

Seriously, I'm going to try to get my hands on one of these. I'm sure it'll be easier if I just went to a gun show and picked one up, but, what the hell. Maybe I'll get lucky.

The ones I was issued were rapped to when I got them. My first one was left over from WWII and Korea. and by the time I got to Germany in the Cold War, they had cycled through Viet Nam as well!

They're all smoothbores by now!

Friend of mine has one that is a model 1911...you'll notice I left out the "A"...made in 1913 IIRC with a serial number in the 3,XXX range. He had to put in a new barrel, one of the grips is cracked, still shoots.

I looked at the websites in the OP, seems like a lot of hoops to jump through to MAYBE get a chance at one. The thing I would hope for is if they flood enough of them onto the market, it might bring the price down for awhile.

Not going to happen. Selling of old gun and ammo is the only money the CMP gets to fund their operations. Like I said earlier, they will be desirable to those who collect different manufacturers or want a piece of history. There aren't that many "hoops" to jump through. Anyone who is even moderately into guns should meet the requirements.

All the ones I saw in the Army were pretty beaten up. The ones in the Coast Guard were in good shape.

From what I understand all the .45s were built 1945 and earlier. Most have been re built with new barrels at least once.

So some have been rebuilt and are in great shape. Others not so much.

As they stated in the 1911 information link, they have not yet graded them.
Im sure there will be a batch that are in serviceable condition, the CMP program has been around a long time, they distribute a variety of firearms to promote civilian marksmanship, which is their mission, hence the name
Civilian Marksmanship Program.
It is a worthwhile program.

Don't like semi-autos. I happen to like single action revolvers.
