Romania starts arming
After US President Trump met Romanian President Iohannis, the weapons procurement activity has picked up speed like never before:
HIMARS

Patriot
http://www.dsca.mil/major-arms-sales...-and-equipment
F-16s
- 12 received so far from Portugal, Gov't has announced it plans to buy 36 more from US
Piranha AAPCs
- Romania plans to buy 227
AH-1Zs
- Romania reportedly wants to buy 45 AH-1Z attack helicopters
I post this because I've never seen such a flurry of deals before in the last decades. Stuff is really getting done.

Any threat, but Russia in particular given the latest developments.

I was thinking that North was the one safe direction these days.
How is Bulgaria doing now? Turkey has got to be giving them the jitters lately.

How much is Roumania's buying spree going to cost the US taxpayer? Usually these kinds of deals are floated on US Gov't credit.

Most of that list seems to be older stuff. I don't know why they would want Piranhas though, which version? There are four wheel, six wheel and eight wheel. No tanks? Maybe Germany and the Netherlands have a few Leopard II's in storage?

We can't afford new stuff, the important thing is for it to be newer than what we currently have.
Reportedly, Piranha V eight-wheel (but unconfirmed).
Also forgot to add on the list:
MBDA's Multi-Layered, Tactical Air Defense System

One problem you have is in the Tank Arm. Last I heard there were only T-54's and T-55's. Maybe the Israelis have some M-60's available cheap? You can't get by with just Light Infantry and a few Motor Rifle units.

T-55's can be refitted and overhauled for a decent second tier tank these days.
You add a US built transmission and engine. Plop the reliable L7 105mm gun on it. Install a up-to-date fire control system, put a hydro pneumatic suspension on the vehicle with new longer lasting tracks, maybe add a good fire suppression system, and some bolt on composite armor, and Vola! You have a decent tank again.

We have TR-85M1s. Still old, but not as old as the non-upgraded T-55s.
The options are to buy Leopards (but I've heard Poland has already seriously tapped into the German and Dutch stocks of used Leopards) or Abrams, or to upgrade our tanks to TR-85M2s.
But nothing has been announced for the tank arm, not even as an intention, for the time being the procurements focus on F-16s, AT missiles, AD systems, personnel carriers and navy corvettes.

The armor on the old T-55 was never good in the first place, the only good thing about those old beasts is how large the turret is compared to how compact the newer guns are.
What about South Korea or China? Some of their new tanks look pretty good.

Don't know about tanks, but the buy included two battalions worth of HIMARS with support vehicles/equipment and [i]guided[/] rockets. That is pretty hefty art'y support right there.

China is out of the question because it looks like Romania (and other Eastern European nations) are going American. Korea needs what she has, and any new top of the line model is going to be too expensive for Romania.
Note the AH-1Zs though. Probably get a bigger bang for the buck for them rather than tanks.
