I think they overlooked one very important development. The 1998 release of Battlezone for the PC was arguably one fo the first FPS games that incorporated vehicles and infantry combat with success. Not too mention it had an RTS aspect to it.

To the cool site comment. Wiki is a amazing site. Yet its getting too popular. Teachers now jump on anything related to wiki and label is crap and untrue on projects. Wikipedia is basically banned as a source for projects.

For the next comment. I feel proud. Finally a post bringing up something that I already knew about! That Doom screen pic is awesome.

I,for one, was disappointed to see no mention of Operation Wolf.

Yes! I was thinking the same thing. Operation Wolf was one of my favorite arcade games in the '80s, and an important part of fps history.

Now you know why Wikipedia is so fallible and unacceptable to school teachers. The imformation is quite simply false.

The FPS came about long before Doom and that that other stuff. Any game in which the action takes place through the eyes of the player is FPS; therefore, early games such as Red Baron and even before that were FPS's that refined the genre. I was playing FPS's on my old 128k Apple in green-and-white long before Doom even existed.

I have to agree with most. Yet why Doom is only mentioned is because 1. Wikipedia is not always right 2. When someone thinks FPS, they think a screen with a gun in front and the player shooting stuff. Red Baron seems like a First Person Combat fighter game. Yet still a shooter, for you are shooting things. It does not fit the most known look of an FPS. Which is why it is going to be popular to say Games like Doom started it up. Also because it probably was more influential and more well known. Inless then a year Doom went from an order in game, to Doom II in stores I think it mentioned. (Im gambling its right) Thats high popularity. Strategic Command II and most games by Battlefront are still not in stores. I have seen Afrika Korps though.

What is this Red Baron you speak of too? Im interested.

Red Baron was an early WW1 flight sim. I forget who made it but they also came up with 'Aces Over Europe' and 'Aces of the Pacific'. They were pretty good in their day...early to mid nineties I think.
Anyone rememer Spear of Destiny by Id?

Funny all the mention of Red Baron. While in CA last summer doing the Reserve thing, I found one of those arcade machines that have a bunch of games on them and Red Baron was one of them. (I had fun beating the youngsters on Mortal Kombat 1)

I use it to study for nursing school exams and it's more useful than $1,400 worth of textbooks which I have in both paper format and electronic on my laptop...and my grades reflect how effective it is. I wouldn't use it as a reference for a paper but for looking up health science concepts its super. It helps doctors get through medical school.

Expensive textbooks are super and have amazing illustrations but the pace of going through the pages looking for a piece of data is too slow. Wikipedia's search engine always seems to know exactly what you're looking for.

You have to watch out because some articles are biased. Corporate giants like Microsoft or Exxon and also politicians will send people to edit articles and remove any unfavorable information about the corporation/person. How can you catch them and prove they're on somebody's payroll? You can't. When somebody is trying to sabotage an article administrators can lock it but that defeats the purpose of a people's encyclopedia.

And this is precisely why Wikipedia is worse than useless. You have no way to verify the truthfulness of any entry, which is the primary value of any reference source. Thwe difference betqween your textbooks and Wikipedia is that your textbooks have been verified to the best of the publisher's abilities, repeatedly, and if you ever provide care for me, I want to know for a fact that yur grades are based on accurate and reliable knowledgwe - not on a tainted source like Wikipedia.

A tip is to always look for the sources in Wikipedia articles. You then need to judge for your own how reliable the information can be, or if there are any inconsistencies, just like one should do when reading a "normal" textbook if you get suspicous. Internet sources in general always needs a fair deal of skepticism.
